BSL Level 1 – Course Outline
Course Overview:
BSL Level 1 introduces learners to the fundamentals of British Sign Language, enabling them to communicate in everyday situations. This course is ideal for beginners with little or no prior knowledge of BSL. Learners will gain confidence in basic conversation and understanding of Deaf culture.
Duration:
30 weeks (2 hours per session)
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Understand Deaf culture and communication etiquette.
- Use the BSL alphabet for fingerspelling names and words.
- Express basic information about themselves (introductions, likes, dislikes).
- Use numbers, time, days, and simple everyday phrases.
- Engage in simple signed conversations.
Key Topics / Modules:
- Introduction to BSL & Deaf Culture – etiquette, history, and community insights.
- BSL Alphabet & Fingerspelling – practice spelling names and common words.
- Numbers & Time – counting, days, months, and telling the time.
- Everyday Vocabulary – greetings, family, hobbies, colors, and objects.
- Simple Conversations – role-playing basic interactions and expressing needs.
- Practical Communication – short dialogues, storytelling, and conversational practice.
Assessment / Certification:
Practical assessment through participation and exercises.
Certificate awarded by an approved Signature Awarding Body, recognised for formal BSL progression.
